Big race jockey Glen Boss is happy to be riding the wave of the resurgence of the Mark Kavanagh stable as the pair team up on Caulfield Guineas Day at Caulfield on Saturday.
Glen Boss will ride Chivalry in the Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield.
Boss has been putting plenty of work into the Kavanagh trained horses at trackwork and will be aboard Fastnet Rock filly Pickin’ Time in the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Street Cry colt Chivalry in the Group 1 $1m BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
The three time Melbourne Cup winning jockey was keen to take up the void after Kavanagh’s stable rider Michael Rodd decided to go freelance and even though Boss hasn’t replaced him on a full time scale, he is working closely with the top Flemington trainer to help in the rebuilding process of his stable.
“How many spring carnivals are there when Kav doesn’t have at least one good horse? Not many you’ll find,” Boss told the Herald Sun.
“I said I was prepared to work hard together with him and do the hard yards.
“Once I was there for a couple of weeks I knew I’d done the right thing as I could see what direction he was going in with his horses.
“He’s got a number of Street Crys, Fastnet Rocks, High Chaparrals, Street Senses which need maturity and they’re all coming through together.”
“I always knew he was a good trainer but to actually be there and see what he was doing and how he’s bringing the horses along — I’ve been really impressed.”
While Pickin’ Time and Chivalry are at double figure odds for their respective races, Boss and Kavanagh will be heading to Caulfield with high expectations.
Kavanagh has removed the blinkers from Pickin’ Time on the recommendation of Boss following her two lengths sixth to Afleet Esprit in the Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 28.
“I’ve been racing her in blinkers and he’s always said she doesn’t need them. On Saturday she’ll run without them,” Kavanagh said.
And Boss is willing to forget the run of Chivalry when sixth to Almalad in the Group 2 $200,000 Jeep Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 26 when the race was run at a ridiculous pace.
“Completely forgive run. It was an awful race, just put a pen through it. Not a contest, the pace was ridiculously slow,’’ Boss said.
“I was in restricted room all the way, I was never having a gallop. Just put a pen through it.”
Pickin’ Time is marked as a $15 chance in the Thousand Guineas with Ladbrokes.com.au who have the Robert Smerdon trained Lumosty the $4.20 favourite just ahead of Go Indy Go and Afleet Esprit at $5 and Bring Me The Maid at $7.
While Chivalry is a $14 chance in the Caulfield Guineas with the in-form Rich Enuff dominating the betting at $2.30 ahead of Shooting To Win at $6.50, Looks Like The Cat at $7 and Almalad at $8.
