Boomwaa To The Spelling Paddock After Sires Produce Stakes

Trainer Robbie Laing has revealed that Boomwaa will be having his final start as a two-year-old when he contests the Henry Bucks Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Boomwaa made his racing debut in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on October 5 last and has had seven starts as a juvenile, which included a dominant win in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m), a run at weight-for-age level in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) and a brave fifth place finish in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Laing told Sky Racing HQ that it feels as though Boomwaa has been a member of his stable for a long time and believes that the son of Mutawaajid has earned a stint in the spelling paddock before returning for a spring campaign.

“He is certainly a tough two-year-old,” Laing said.

“It seems like he has been around for ages after kicking off in the Maribyrnong Trial, but when it is all said and done he has only had seven starts.

“This will be his last run as a two-year-old.”

Boomwaa was caught wide during the early stages of the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on February 22, but was able to battle home fairly to finish fifth behind Earthquake.

Laing admits that the tough performance took plenty out of the two-year-old, but is hopeful that he still has something left in the tank for the VRC Sires Produce Stakes at Flemington this weekend.

“He has done really well; I haven’t overtaxed him and he really felt his run in the Blue Diamond, but he has bounced back and looks very fit,” Laing said.

“He just went 1200 evens and bolted along in both fast mornings this week and hopefully there is something in the tank for Saturday.”

The 2014 edition of the Henry Bucks Sires Produce Stakes has drawn a strong field; with debut winner Marcado, Mick Price-trained Hawking and last start winner Awesome Rock all included in the field for the Group 2 event.

Marcado made his racing debut with a surprise win in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on February 15, while Hawking and Awesome Rock are both taking winning form into the race after taking out a maiden at Geelong and the Say It With Flowers Handicap (1300m) at Sandown respectively.
