Boom Time has won four of his last five starts since November and earned a start in the Australian Cup with his win in the Listed $120,000 Ladbrokes Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield on February 25.

“It only leaves me with one runner and that’s Boom Time, but he’s won four of his last five starts, so he’ll be competitive,” co-trainer David Hayes said.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig had also planned to run the front running Pilote D’Essai but the French import has been forced out of action after bowing a tendon in track work.

“That was a blow but we’re hopeful through good rehabilitation the horse can come back and be competitive,” Hayes said.

David Hayes has won the Australia Cup on three previous occasions, twice on his own with Better Loosen Up in 1991 and Niconero in 2009 and once with Tom Dabernig with Spillway in 2015.

Boom Time has been rated as one of the outsiders of the Australian Cup at $34 with Ladbrokes.com.au while premiership winning trainer Darren Weir will supply the $3.80 favourite Humidor.

Ciaron Maher’s Caulfield Cup winner Jameka is the second pick at $4.40 ahead of the John O’Shea trained Hartnell at $6, The United States at $6.50 and Exopheric at $7.50.

Weir will also saddle up multiple Group 1 winner Stratum Star who is next in the betting at $9.

Early market order for the Australian Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au: $3.80 Humidor, $4.40 Jameka, $6 Hartnell, $6.50 The United States, $7.50 Exospheric, $9 Stratum Star, $15 Tom Melbourne, $17 Awesome Rock, Ecuador, Endless Drama, Real Love, $21 Preferment, Tally, $26 Seaburge, $34 Boom Time, $51 or better the rest.
