Blue Diamond Joy Could Await MRC Members

In a trend that’s becoming popular with racing clubs across the country members of the Melbourne Racing Club are anxiously anticipating the Blue Diamond campaign of Member’s Joy.

The two year old is trained by Robert Smerdon and is owned by the members of the club to give them a sense of being more involved in the industry.

Similar programs are underway at both small and large clubs al over Australia but few horses have shown the promise of Member’s Joy.

She won on debut at Sandown two months ago, easily disposing of a moderate field over 900m to win by two and a half lengths.

She was given a short freshen up and Smerdon believes she’ll be good to go for the Blue Diamond Preview this Thursday at Caulfield.

“She had one run last prep, then a brief let up and has bounced back really well,” Smerdon said.

In that race it was Mrs Gray that ran second and since then she overcame a luckless run and plenty of track bias to finish fifth over the top of some good horses in the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast.

That gives Member’s Joy a pretty decent form line and even though she hasn’t had any further starts a month in the paddock still had advantages.

“It wasn’t a lot of time out but it was a good break for her mentality and her attitude is much better,” Smerdon said.

The trainer says there’s no doubt she’s a black type filly but just how good she can be remains to be seen.

“She’s certainly got some talent, to my mind, to be successful at black type level but how far that takes her through the Blue Diamond series remains to be seen,” he said.

“Thursday will give us a good guide whether she is up to them.”
