Kalgoorlie Cup winner Kincaple will be sharpened up with blinkers for the Group 1 $500,000 Kingston Town Classic (1800m)  at Ascot on Saturday.

Trainer Mark Reed is taking a calculated risk with the ex-Victorian wanting him to settle closer to the lead without pulling.

It is a case of winkers off and blinkers on for the first time, a time honoured tactic that has seen many horses change their form around.

Not that Kincaple’s form has been too bad, in fact it has been quite good with four wins from seven starts since arriving from Victoria.

Those wins include two at Kalgoorlie.

Improvement is needed on his latest start when seventh in the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot a fortnight ago as he meets a similar field.

On that occasion, the six-year-old settled further back than desired after drawing barrier 13.

The son of Pentire ran on strongly from near last when beaten six lengths by Kingston Town favourite Luckygray.

“If we draw a barrier we’ll have him ridden a bit closer,” Reed said.

“He doesn’t have to get that far back.

“He’s just been ridden like that because of bad barriers.

“He’s not as brilliant as Luckygray and those sort of horses but one thing he can do is make it a genuinely run race and maybe take a bit of sting out of them.

“He won’t lie down this horse, he’ll just keep going.”

Reed will watch today’s barrier draw with intense interest.

He was delighted his horse’s Railway run, but acknowledges the weight-for-age conditions of the Kingston Town  are not in his favour.

Kincaple was a $13 chance in the Railway but TABsportsbet have him $10 for Saturday’s race.

That is despite a 6kg rise to 59kg.

Luckygray is $2.60 ahead of Ranger $3.80 and King Saul $4.80 in betting.
