A lightning move at the 800m by jockey Glen Boss set up a winning break for Black Tomahawk in the Listed $120,000 italktravel Harry White Classic (2400m) at Caulfield today.
With a moderate pace being set up front by Epsom Hill, Boss took it upon himself to change the tempo of the race and set off on the Mike Moroney stayer well before the home turn.
Black Tomahawk skipped to a two lengths lead as heads were turned for home and the six year old was able to hold the strong finish of Excess Knowledge to secure an overdue win.
Black Tomahawk has been placed at his last five starts since July and Boss’ ride was the difference between winning and being placed again.
Moroney said the Black Tomahawk ($11) isn’t nominated for the Caulfield Cup or the Melbourne Cup but he would find some suitable staying races for him over the Spring.
“He is not nominated for the Cups or any think like that but I think he is a dead set stayer,” Moroney said.
Runner up Excess Knowledge ($3.70 favourite) travelled in third and fourth spot in the run and tried hard in the straight to go down by a neck with At First Sight ($7) two and a half lengths away in third spot.
The Gai Waterhouse trained Excess Knowledge is nominated for the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17 and even though he didn’t find the winner’s stall today, showed that he could run out a tough 2400m.
