Controversy over Black Caviar’s winning time in the Group 1 $750,000 Coolmore Lightning Stakes (1000m) has surfaced with evidence that the Queen of Australian racing did in fact set a new 1000m track record at Flemington last Saturday.

Daily Sectionals, a company that provides Racing Victoria with an assessment of all race times throughout Victoria, revealed that the digital reproduction of the Lightning had shown that Black Caviar has indeed stopped the clock at 55.44 seconds, 0.09s quicker than the 55.53s recorded at Flemington on Saturday.

If this is in fact correct then Special’s track record of 55.5s is under threat.

Daily Sectional’s owner Vince Accardi said that he had triple checked the time and has reported his findings to Racing Victoria racing manager Greg Carpenter for further consideration.

“Where Vince’s time falls outside his usual variance of between one and two tenths of a second, then we would make further investigation,” Carpenter said.

“Given this is below the usual variance, it’s something we’ll have to look at.”

Accardi is confident his findings are correct using all the latest technology which is available.

“We were fortunate that we had a head-on shot of the start so we couldn’t get that wrong and there was a very clear and concise line at the finish, so I feel it’s as perfect as I can get it using digital-age technology,” he said.

“Everything from my point of view demonstrates that 55.44sec is the time.”

According to Accardi, Black Caviar’s performance in the Lightning was simply sensational, describing it as the best ever 1000m at Flemington which included an amazing 9.98s split from the 600m to the 400m.
