Mornington Racecourse is hoping to secure Black Caviar for a track gallop on Melbourne Cup Day

Mornington Racecourse is making a play for Black Caviar to perform a track gallop at the course on Melbourne Cup Day this year.

It would be the superstar’s final gallop before competing in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day.

Mornington Racing Club (MRC) chairman Mike Symons hopes that by enticing Peter Moody to bring Black Caviar to their track they would attract record crowd numbers.

“We are planning for 5000-8000, but if we get Black Caviar that’ll pack them in,” Mr Symons said.

Mornington is another club that is attempting to cash in on the marketing ability of Black Caviar.

The rising five-year-old has won all 13 of her career race starts and is currently in work preparing for the upcoming spring racing carnival in Melbourne.

Mr Symons said that the MRC were not attempting to compete with Flemington Racecourse, and did not feel that a Black Caviar appearance at Mornington would decrease Melbourne Cup crowd numbers.

He said they would be targeting people who weren’t planning to attend Flemington in the first place.

“We plan a family-friendly day,” Symons said.

“We are catering for people who would be spending the day at home having a barbecue.

“We are not competing with Flemington.”

Mornington Racecourse will also hold the Peninsula Cup Day on the Sunday prior to the Melbourne Cup.
