Somewhere in Melbourne today there will be a business lunch that will make all other business lunches look insignificant.

It is a lunch that when concluded will have decided upon the campaign route for Australia’s greatest racehorse, Black Caviar.

Just about anybody with any association with Black Caviar will have their views expressed during the meeting, right down to the stable masseur.

It’s all about making sure nothing is overlooked on the most anticipated race program from an Australian horse since Phar Lap.

All options remain on the table and stable manager Jeff O’Connor says it could be a case of crossing off the least desirable possibilities before settling on a final list.

“All the key opinions will come into it,” O’Connor said.

“What she can physically deal with over the next few months, comparisons to how she has been physically leading into previous campaigns, where she is at.

“Everything will be ticked off, just like with a football team.”

There’s no shortage of options being brought to the meeting, Dubai, Sydney, Royal Ascot, Japan and Hong Kong all remain very real targets and offer different things.

Some have bigger prize money, others might give greater recognition and at the end of the day some may just simply be more enjoyable.

All of this rests on the fact Black Caviar has no issues with the CF Orr Stakes or the Futurity Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield this month but barring injury it’s pretty much a given.

Part owner Gary Wilkie says Peter Moody will decide on any races that aren’t viable and from there the owners can pick and choose.

“Peter’s the only one among us who has campaigned horses overseas, so it’s his call as to what Black Caviar can and can’t handle,” Wilkie said.

“The most important thing, for all of us, is to not risk her wellbeing.

“Raising the bar is not the catalyst for any decision we make.

“For us it’s all about having fun, just as it was the first day we bought her.

“We’re all very keen for Royal Ascot. All our families are booked to go. We can’t imagine anything being more fun than having the odds-on favourite running at Royal Ascot (in the Golden Jubilee Stakes).”
