Victoria Racing Club are anticipating the possibility of hosting the clash of the titans with the world’s top two sprinters Black Caviar and Hay List to be nominated tomorrow for the Group 1 $1m Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9.

Premier trainer Peter Moody hasn’t ruled out a run in the nations top sprint race with Black Caviar in her farewell tour and trainer John McNair is now eyeing off the Newmarket as Hay List’s return to the racetrack after a long layoff due to injury.

Moody would consider a start in the Newmarket if the world’s number one rated sprinter wasn’t harshly weighted and is hoping Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter will treat her favourably as was the case with Makybe Diva which enabled the great staying mare to win three Melbourne Cups.

“They looked after Makybe Diva to get bums on seats, why not the same for my little girl?” Moody said.

“Black Caviar will be entered for the Newmarket. We’ll then have to wait and see.”

“A lot will depend not on what weight she is given but the weight given to those around her.”

Black Caviar is back in full work following a break after returning from England where the mighty mare took her undefeated record to twenty two with her heart stopping win in the Group 1 £500,000 The Diamond Jubilee Stakes (6 furlongs) at Royal Ascot on June 23 last year.

Black Caviar was given a rating of 130 when the International Federation of Horse Authorities released the 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings in London last week to be rated the champion sprinter in the world for the third successive year.

Moody is aiming Black Caviar to run first up in the Group 1 $500,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington on February 16 and is well on target with an exhibition gallop in between races at Caulfield on February 2 in the pipeline.

McNair would prefer that his great sprinter Hay List and Black Caviar not to meet, but he won’t be walking away from a clash with the super mare down the Flemington straight.

“How blessed are we in racing right now with Black Caviar and with him, they’re just two excitement machines. Personally I’d just love for them to not meet for a while,” McNair said.

“We’ll nominate him for the Newmarket and if we can get him there then it it’s a bonus for us and a bonus for everyone else”.

“I had originally only been thinking about the Lightning Stakes but with that three week gap between the Lightning and the Newmarket, although it doesn’t sound like much, it really gives us that extra time to get him fit.

“He’s on schedule. He will have at least one, if not two trials before he runs and we’ll just see how the next five or six weeks go and what the field is like and then we’ll work it out from there.”

Hay List has finished second to Black Caviar in the last two runnings of the Lightning Stakes and had to be scratched from the 2011 Newmarket Handicap which Black Caviar won with 58kgs.

With the absence of Black Caviar in last year’s Newmarket, Hay List put up a phenomenal performance to beat Buffering by a nose with 58.5kgs but after running second to Foxwedge in the Group 1 $400,000 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 23, the giant sprinter was forced onto the sideline with a bout of colic as well as suffering a knee injury.
