Simply Brilliant has produced an impressive trial performance for trainer Bjorn Baker at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this morning ahead of her upcoming spring campaign.

The lightly raced mare has had just four starts during her horse racing career, despite being six-years-old.

The well-bred Starcraft mare has won two of those four race starts and has earned approximately $10,000 in prize money.

Today’s trial was just the second official run Simply Brilliant has had since 2010, having finished second in a previous trial at Rosehill on July 22.

However, the talented mare appeared too good for her proven competitors over 1,030 metres today, winning the race in impressive fashion ahead of Honorius and Criterion.

Honorius is returning from a short spell after competing in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in May and June.

The Holy Roman Empire entire placed third behind Hawkspur in his most recent start in the Group 1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 8.

Honorius has won two of his 19 race starts during his horse racing career and has earned more than $315,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

The David Payne-trained galloper looked primed and ready to return for the upcoming spring carnival.

Honorius played a large part in both last year’s Sydney and Melbourne spring carnivals.

He placed second in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes before going on to finish third in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes behind It’s A Dundeel and Proisir.

The then three-year-old went on to run second in the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes ahead of an eighth placing in the $1.5 million Victoria Derby over 2,500 metres.

Criterion, who placed third in today’s barrier trial, performed well against the older horses.

The Sebring colt was a solid performer in the autumn, winning the Listed Black Opal Stakes and the Group 2 Todman Stakes before placing a commendable sixth in the Golden Slipper.

He will be targeting some of the major three-year-old features this spring, including the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas in October.
