Trainer Kelly Schweida is already looking towards next autumn’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate with his stable star Better Than Ready.

Better Than Ready won the Listed Keith Noud Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday after also saluting in the $50,000 Club Super Handicap in his previous race run.

“It was a good effort. He had 60 and a half kilos. So the run was good,” Schweida said of his last start win.

“I think he was as strong as anything on the line.”

Schweida will now send Better Than Ready to the paddock before bringing him back for the autumn racing carnival.

“He’s going to the paddock today,” he said.

“You don’t get much time these days with all these races.

“He’ll probably run in the Rubiton (Stakes) a fortnight before the Oakleigh Plate.

“If he gets weighted out…or he draws bad then I think the Lightning (Stakes) is a week later.

“But the Oakleigh Plate would be one of his main goals.”

While the Oakleigh Plate is run over 1,100 metres, Schweida admitted that that is not his ideal distance.

“I would think 1,200 (metres) probably is his best trip,” Schweida said.

The trainer is hoping that Better Than Ready will excel at the Melbourne way of going in what will be his first attempt.

“You’re never 100% sure,” he said.

“He’s only been to Melbourne once for the Newmarket.

“Caulfield can be pretty tricky. You really don’t know until you try them.”

Better Than Ready has won eight of his 15 race starts and has earned more than $477,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

The four-year-old has multiple Listed wins to his name but is yet to claim an elusive Group victory, with his closest effort coming in the Group 1 BTC Cup in May where he placed third.
