Glen Boss

Jockey Glen Boss will ride Smart Missile in the Golden Rose

Glen Boss is the man tasked with pulling off a big plunge on Smart Missile this weekend when the well fancied colt lines up in the Golden Rose at Rosehill Gardens.

Fresh off his victory in the Run To The Rose and boasting an overall unbeaten record on paper there’s no doubt he’s the one to beat tomorrow afternoon.

The looming poor weather over Sydney has done little to dampen the spirits of Boss either who says he’s a deserved favourite regardless of the track rating.

“He’s adapted to all conditions, it’d be nice to get a dead track so everyone gets an even opportunity,” he said.

He says he hasn’t thought too much about the early makeup of the race and he’s not going into the event with pre-conceived ideas on where he wants to settle.

“These small fields can be tricky if you lock yourself into a pattern of how you think you’re going to ride the horse,” he said.

“It really just comes down to tactics, it depends how my horse jumps from the barriers.

“Gates open and I take it from there…it can all change in a heartbeat.”

After his last start victory Boss declared Smart Missile as potentially the greatest horse he’s ever ridden.

He later clarified that it excluded Makybe Diva, but still, after putting that sort of rap on a horse there was never going to be any backing down leading into the Golden Rose.

“He beat them pretty convincingly I thought (in the Run To The Rose), he gave Foxwedge the better part of seven lengths at the 600m mark, gave Helmet two or three lengths at the same point,” he said.

“He’s the best horse in the race, there’s no doubt about that.”

He says he’ll just be taking things easy in the early part of tomorrow’s race before putting him in a spot to win and letting the horse do the work.

“The first 600m I just do my thing and let the horse get into rhythm, you just have to make sure at the 600 you’re in striking distance,” he said.

“I know what my horse is capable of doing…you virtually know what start he can give.”
