Paul Beshara cannot contain his excitement about stable star Happy Trails who will have the second start of his spring campaign in Saturday’s Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

The talented five-year-old kicked off in winning style earlier this month when beating home Gossip Girl and Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed in the Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphetville.

He may be stepping up in class this weekend but Beshara has declared the horse is in career best form and ready to take on the likes of Perth galloper Luckygray and Cox Plate placegetter Rekindled Interest.

“He’d never won first-up [before the Spring Stakes],” Beshara told Sky Sports Radio.

“I trialled him the week before and he won and he’s a much more mature horse now.”

The son of Good Journey may have won just three times from 24 starts but showed last preparation that he was beginning to realise his potential.

After running fourth in the Doncaster Prelude, Beshara entered him in the Doncaster Mile where he showed a sharp turn of foot to make up plenty of ground and finish sixth to More Joyous.

So highly does Beshara rate Happy Trails, he has nominated him for the Cox Plate and is adamant the Australasian weight-for-age championship is the ultimate spring goal.

“I’d like to go to the Cox Plate, if I can get in I’d definitely go there,” Beshara said.

“[But] I need to win some major races between now and the Cox Plate to get in.”

Beshara has employed the services of multiple Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss for Saturday’s test in which Happy Trails has drawn barrier 11.

The Caulfield track is currently rated a dead 4 but the Adelaide trainer said his charge will perform regardless of what conditions are presented.

“He’ll run on any track, it just doesn’t worry him,” he said.
