Tommy Berry describes his book of rides this Saturday as his best to date and it’s easy to see why given the names on the list.

Manawanui, Driefontein and Karuta Queen headline his card, three of the most interesting horses on the entire Warwick Farm race program.

Every one of them is a winning chance so Berry is well aware his stakes winning record could have a nice boost by the end of Saturday.

“This is the best book of big-race rides I’ve had on the one day,” he said.

“There’s Manawanui, who I rode once last season for a win at Canterbury and look what he has gone on and done since.

“Driefontein is going super, I’d say she has improved since winning the Magic Millions, and Karuta Queen is on the quick back-up after being unlucky at Caulfield.”

Each horse brings something different to the table and at the moment Berry doesn’t know which one he likes best.

“They are three very good horses, I don’t know which one I’m looking forward to riding the most, but I can’t wait for Saturday,” he said.

Manawanui runs first up in the Royal Sovereign Stakes over a 1200m trip that will certainly test him.

He’s more suited to longer journeys now days and with the likes of Moment Of Change, Hot Snitzel, Doctor Doom and Darci Be Good set to face him he’ll need every bit of his class advantage.

For Karuta Queen in the Light Fingers Stakes it’s all about bouncing back from her poor run last start where she missed the kick and found herself boxed behind runners.

She faces a seven day backup for the first time as well as some handy rivals including Streama, Pane In The Glass, Al’s Magic Miss and Hallowell Belle.

“She didn’t have a hard run at Caulfield,” Berry said. “She was held up behind horses for most of the race.

“I think the Warwick Farm 1200m is going to suit her.”

As for Driefontein, she’ll be a favourite in the Widden Stakes as she looks to kick off her Golden Slipper journey in style.

Berry says there’s a noticeable difference between the horse he rode before the Magic Millions and now.

I used to have to ‘niggle’ Driefontein to finish her gallops off strongly but these days, she is doing it on the bit,” Berry said.

“The trip to Queensland for the Magic Millions has really brought her on, she’s going better than ever.”
