Kiwi stayer Benzini will have to be content with another wide barrier after drawing gate eleven in the Listed $175,000 The Pump House Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.
Twelve horses accepted for the Caloundra Cup and Benzini also has the job of carrying the 59.5kg top weight.
The Adrian and Harry Bull trained Benzini will jump from a wide barrier with the top weight again after running second to Self Sense from gate nine with 60kg in the Listed $175,000 Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m) at Ipswich on June 17.
The heavily backed Self Sense was a runaway six and three quarter lengths winner in the Ipswich Cup but will meet Benzini 2.5kg worse at the weights in the Caloundra Cup.
New Zealand jockey Kelly McCulloch rides Benzini again in the Caloundra Cup and Ipswich Cup winning jockey Michael Cahill will stick with Self Sense who drew barrier eight.
Self Sense scored his first win in over two years in the Ipswich Cup but trainer David Brideoake said that his lead up form in Victoria was good.
“His form before going to Brisbane was outstanding, but marred by bad barriers. Running home from last at Flemington into third, a big run in the Yarra Valley Cup, a big run in the Mornington Cup. It was only a matter of time before all the ducks lined up,” Brideoake said.
“With a good gate, and some softness in the ground, the horse was in his element.”
The Darren Weir trained Neverland will jump from the outside gate in the twelve horse field with Jye McNeil aboard and the five year old mare is coming off a last start sixth to Chocante in the Group 2 $300,000 Evergreen Turf Brisbane Cup (2200m) at Doomben on June 10.
War Baby has found some good form following trainer Kelvin Hickmott’s decision to step her up in distance and she blew her opposition away two starts back with a six and a half lengths win in a 2150m BenchMark 80 Handicap at Ipswich on Ipswich Cup Day.
War Baby then proved that was not a fluke with a gutsy effort to run third behind Rudy and More Energy in the Group 3 $200,000 Carlton Mid Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben last Saturday.
Larry Cassidy has been aboard War Baby for her last three starts and sticks with the mare who drew nicely at barrier two.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Supply And Demand is chasing a hat trick of wins after scoring at his last two runs at Rosehill in the $100,000 Eremein Handicap (1800m) and in the $100,000 Kensei Handicap (2000m).
Josh Parr takes over from apprentice Rachel King on Supply And Demand who will jump from gate nine i the Caloundra Cup.
