Bel Sprinter will be first up in the Oakleigh Plate in 2012

While Black Caviar may overshadow any other sprinter in the world, let alone Australia, there is another local prospect that has made big waves in only a short career.

Bel Sprinter was on an unbeaten streak in his own right winning his first five race starts in emphatic style.

He eventually did get beaten when pipped by Lone Rock in the Bobbi Lewis Quality but it takes little away from a magnificent career to date.

Trainer Jason Warren says he’s been thrilled with the four year olds progress, including the race he was beaten in.

“Even the last run when he ran second was very good, he was a sitting duck all the way up the Flemington straight,” he said.

“He’s a really exciting horse.”

Bel Sprinter hasn’t raced since that defeat on September third with Warren willing to play it patient, even if that means missing out on the big spring features.

“It’s very tempting to press on with a progressive horse like him, he’s in good order,” he said.

“He probably lightened off a touch and I didn’t want to muck around with him.”

While two of his three runs have been up the straight at Flemington that’s not a path Warren is keen to keep following.

“He’s much more dominant around a bend I think,” he said.

“Reluctant to go back to the Flemington straight unless it’s over 1000m beaus of the way he races.”

His first up run will be in the Oakleigh Plate before a full autumn program is worked out.

“He’s a horse that will be guided on how he does in the Oakleigh Plate,” Warren said.

He is expecting even further improvement next year though as the horse has filled out to his full size.

“He’s a lovely sound horse…he’s  a big strong boy now, he looks like a four year old stallion,” he said.

“He couldn’t look any better.”
