Bel Sprinter will face the Flemington straight six

There are few greater sights in Australian horse racing than the famed 1200m up the Flemington straight and this Saturday there’ll be no less than three events showcasing this format.

One of them is the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality and it has the bonus of also being able to showcase one of Australia’s best new talents.

Bel Sprinter remains unbeaten so far in his career with four starts for four tremendous triumphs.

He’s worked his way through the ranks in dominating fashion but on Saturday he’ll face his biggest task to date.

There could be as many as 20 horses in the Bobbie Lewis Quality and among them are a string of Group 1 champions.

If Bel Sprinter is the real deal he needs to prove that this weekend and that’s something trainer Jason Warren is well aware of.

“He’s stepping up in grade again this weekend and hopefully he can come through it in flying colours again,” he said.

Bel Sprinter has one up the straight previously but that was also the time he came closest to defeat.

As a result Warren will have clear instruction for jockey Ben Melham come the weekend.

“If he hits the front again too early he’s going to be a bit more vulnerable,” he said.

That said the horse has improved since that time so a combination of fitness and familiarity with the straight track could see him perform even better.

“He’s got that experience under his belt, he’s improving with each run,” Warren said.

“He’s more of a furnished racehorse now, presented a lot better in the mounting yard last time.”

The reports from the stables are also good and he was given a full gallop earlier this morning.

“His work was terrific, nice and sharp looked great,” Warren said.

“He’s probably better now then what he was earlier in his prep.

“Ben came in to work the horse this morning, he was very happy with the horse, had plenty of petrol left in the tank after a good solid workout.”

Not surprisingly given the success of Bel Sprinter so far in his career offers have being flooding in to try and buy the horse but at the moment connections are standing firm.

“All the owners are more than happy to continue racing him at this stage,” Warren said.

Another victory this weekend and those offers are likely to become even lucrative as he continues his path to a Group 1 satrt.
