Jason Warren is now looking to some of Melbourne’s early spring features for his impressive gelding Bel Sprinter after his win at Moonee Valley last Saturday.

The three-year-old gelding won the Craigieburn Sporting Club Handicap by half a length ahead of General Truce and Punctuate.

The Mornington trainer has always thought Bel Sprinter would have a bright future.

“He’s a serious horse and we were confident enough to bring him here on a Saturday,” Warren said.

Before Saturday’s race, Bel Sprinter had only had one start in a Mornington maiden in December last year.

“I know it’s a big step up from a Mornington maiden, but he’s always shown us a great deal,” Warren said.

“We wanted to get him up and rolling well before the spring because I think he’s going to be good enough for the early races and we wanted to get a Saturday win out of the way early.”

Warren felt that while he showed his inexperience in Saturday’s race, Bel Sprinter also displayed his raw talent and ability.

“Our bloke got run off his legs early,” Warren said.

“He didn’t really look comfortable and he’s green and his raw, but I think he’s got a lot more improvement.”

The trainer may now target Bel Sprinter at Caulfield’s Group 2 Lawrence Stakes or Group 2 Memsie Stakes in August.
