Leading Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman had no hesitation in taking the David Greene trained Beauty’s Beast ($8.50) straight to the front and the Guillotine gelding strode away to score a comfortable win.

The Gai Waterhouse trained Woodbine ($4.40) had every chance and fought on well to finish two lengths second with Engagement ($6.50) from the Peter Snowden stable filling third spot a further two lengths away.

Beauty’s Beast had won his two previous starts in New Zealand at Tauranga and Te Arhoa and that form had tempted his owners, Windsor Park Stud Ltd, to chase some bigger prizes at ‘The Championships’.

“Just before the start before Rodney and Nelson (Windsor Park) said hey you know he is going good enough, he is a gelding, we better have a crack at something worth a bit more money,” Greene said.

“They picked out this race here, smart enough to pick out the right race, we come over and got the chocolates.”

“He is a beautiful horse and that is what you expect of a horse bred at Windsor Park.”

“He’s got a great cruising speed, he is strong, he is lightly raced and there is no reason next season he doesn’t come back bigger stronger horse.”

Today’s win was Beauty’s Beast’s fifth from nine starts and the $90,000 winner’s cheque boosts his prizemoney tally to almost $130,000.

The Waterhouse trained Longma was sent out the $3.20 favourite but looked in trouble before the home turn when Craig Williams started to urge the Sebring colt along and he only plugged in the straight to finish sixth, eight lengths from the winner.
