Former champion jockey Darren Beadman gets his chance to win a Group 1 race as a trainer with Impending in the Group 1 $700,000 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday before being replaced as head trainer for Godolphin’s Australian operation.

Beadman was promoted from assistant trainer to interim trainer for Godolphin following the surprise resignation of head trainer John O’Shea a couple of weeks ago and he has kept the royal blue colours finding their way to the winner’s circle.

Randwick trainer James Cummings has been appointed the new head trainer for Godolphin and will take up his new position on July 8.

Impending has had a freshen up since running third to Derryn in the Group 2 $600,000 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on April 8 and Beadman is giving the three year old a good chance against the older horses in the Kingsford-Smith Cup, formerly known as the BTC Cup which was run over 1200m at Doomben.

Beadman has kept Impending up to the mark with two barrier trials that saw him run second over 900m at Rosehill on May 8 followed by a win over 10505m At Randwick on May 19.

“It’s a tough race but he’s done extremely well,” Beadman said.

“He’s up against older horses, but he’s drawn the inside gate and he’s come through a couple of recent trials in good order.

“He couldn’t be any better than he is at this stage of his preparation.”

Impending has draw the rails in the fourteen horse Kingsford-Smith Cup Field with English James Doyle in the saddle again.

In early betting for the Kingsford-Smith Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au Impending is at the double figures odds of $18 while the Darren Weir trained Black Heart Bart heads the market order at $3.40.

Arrowfield 3yo Sprint winner and Doomben 10,000 third placegetter Derryn is on the second line of betting at $6.
