Bassett has winning form going into Caulfield Guineas

Jockey Daniel Stackhouse is giving himself a great chance of grabbing a Group 1 trophy on Bassett who heads into Saturday’s $1m BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield with winning form on his record.

Trainer Peter Moody has no hesitation in stepping Bassett straight up from a win over 1100m in a three year old Plate at Caulfield three weeks ago to the tough 1600m of the Caulfield Guineas.

Stackhouse can see the job ahead is not easy, but said his association with the Savabeel three year old will go a long way to securing a win over the short priced favourite Press Statement.

Moody used the same tactic during the Brisbane Winter Carnival when he ran Bassett in the Group 1 $600,000 BMW Australia J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Doomben for a fifth after he won at his first race start in an 1100m two year old Plate at Caulfield three weeks earlier.

“It’s not ideal but he has that under his belt from last season,” Stackhouse told the Sportsman.

“He’s a quiet, relaxed horse and he switches off really well so that is going to help.”

“It also helps to have been working the horse and knowing him well.”

Stackhouse is also confident the form around Bassett’s Caulfield win is standing up with the horse he beat last start, the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig trained Keen Array, came out and won the $100,000 Three Year Old Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley last Friday Night.

“Seeing the Hayes horse win on Friday night tells you he is a pretty smart horse,” Stackhouse said.

The young hoop also pointed out that Bassett beat his stablemate Kinglike on debut and he has since impressed with a first up win in the Group 2 $200,000 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 12 and will be heading back to Flemington for the Group 1 $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day.
