Late last season Barysh Quest was considered an early prospect for the Tasmanian Derby and there’s been nothing to change that though ever since.

The Gary White trained three year old won the Hobart Guineas in fine style on Sunday and even the interstate challenges may not be enough to deny him the Derby title.

Craig Newitt took the ride on Barysh Quest for the second time this preparation and had it in the bag early after an easy run in transit.

It was very different to Newitt’s ride in the Tasmanian Guineas where he copped a big check that killed all momentum and was probably the difference on the line when he finished second.

No such issues yesterday though and off a quick tempo Barysh Quest hit the lead with 100m to go and was always travelling better than the rest of the field.

His margin only increased in the dying stages proving he can certainly has the stamina to go further.

Caravaggio finished second over two lengths away with French Tang another two away in third.

White said things couldn’t look better going into the Tasmanian Derby and after that who knows.

“That will top him off nicely for the Derby,” White said.

“I thought Craig (Newitt) might have gone a bit early on him but that’s what he’s paid to do – go out there and make the decisions.

“I think my horse proved his worth as a Derby prospect today and I was also pleased with how (early leader) Colonial Gold (4th) stuck to his guns so he’ll also go to the Derby.”
