Barrier 4 for Black Heart Bart in 2017 Kingsford-Smith Cup

Multiple Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart has drawn nicely at barrier four in the Group 1 $700,000 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Trainer Darren Weir has no concerns of backing up Black Heart Bart in the Kingsford-Smith Cup, which was formerly run as the BTC Cup over 1200m at Doomben, and said that he has pulled up well after running seventh to Vega Magic in last Saturday’s Group 1 $1m Darley Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

“He seems to have come through the run in really good order and it (backing up within a week) won’t worry him. He’s the type of horse that will handle that,” Weir said.

“It’s a race that should suit him as its weight-for-age and I’m sure he’ll get a better ride this week.”

Weir said that Black Heart Bart was ridden too close to the pace last week and was unable to finish the race off as expected and will instruct jockey Brad Rawiller to ride the six year old a bit more quietly this week.

“He just rode him too close,” Weir said.

“He didn’t ride him really badly but for this horse if you ride him too close, he can’t sprint at the end and that’s what happened.”

The Mick Bell trained Jungle Edge is another who is backing up week to week after leading all of the way to win the Group 3 $125,000 Taxibox BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Jungle Edge has drawn the outside barrier in the fourteen horse Kingsford-Smith Cup field but will appreciate the soft Eagle Farm track with Kevin Forrester in the saddle again.

The Eagle Farm track was rated a heavy 8 on Wednesday and even with no rain leading up to the weekend, will still be rated in the soft range come race time which will suit Jungle Edge perfectly.

The Cranbourne trained six year old loves the sting out of the ground and is a five times winner on a heavy track and six times on the soft.

Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller will have two runners in the Kingsfotrd-Smith Cup, last start Doomben 10,000 runner up Counterattack and the out of form Japonisme.

Counterattack has drawn barrier seven with top Kiwi jockey Opie Bosson on board again after partnering the four year old to a fast finishing second to Redzel in the Group 1 $700,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1200m) at Doomben on May 13.

Japonisme has drawn next to stablemate in barrier six with Blake Shinn booked to ride and will have to improve sharply on his last start eighth in the Doomben 10,000 to figure in the finish.

Doomben 10,000 third placegetter Derryn is one of two three year olds in the Kingsford-Smith Cup and will jump from barrier five with Mark Zahra taking over from the injured Regan Bayliss.

Impednig is the other three year old to take on the older horses at weight for age and will be having his first start since running third to Derryn in the Group 2 $600,000 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on April 8.

The Darren Beadman trained colt has drawn the rails with English jockey James Doyle to take the mount again.

Hugh Bowman takes the mount on the Kris Lees trained Clearly Innocent who has drawn barrier nine in the Kingsford-Smith Cup while the local hope Hopfgarten will jump from gate ten with Ronnie Stewart retaining the ride.

Clearly Innocent earned his chance to tackle a Group 1 weight for age race with a convincing win in the Listed $150,000 Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone’s Metropolitan meeting on May 13.
