Barakey Safe in Melbourne for Oakleigh Test

Western Australia’s sprinting sensation Barakey has touched down in Melbourne without a hitch ahead of his east-coast debut in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

The five-year-old flew into Melbourne on Monday night accompanied by trainer Jim Taylor and fellow star Perth galloper Luckygray.

Barakey will be based at Aquanita Racing’s Caulfield stables during his time in Melbourne for what is his first campaign outside his home state.

Taylor said the winner of 11 undefeated starts came through the long trip without any complications and will have some light work over the next couple of days to top him off for Saturday’s test.

The West Australian trainer is hoping for an inside barrier draw which will allow Barakey to take a sit behind the leaders in a race that will feature some genuine speedsters.

The son of Key Business has had two successful trials in the lead-up to the Oakleigh Plate where he will attempt to score a second Group 1 win.

Barakey extended his winning streak to 11 at Ascot in November when taking out the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes ahead of the best sprinting talent the west has to offer as well as some eastern travellers.

He has been allocated 57kg for his first Melbourne hit-out with triple Group 1 winner Ortensia and defending champion Woorim topping the weights with 58kg.

Ortensia will have her first start since a gruelling international campaign last year that saw her win Group 1 races in Dubai and the UK.

Other Oakleigh Plate contenders include Queensland pair Spirit Of Boom and Adebisi and former Magic Millions Classic winner Karuta Queen.
