Bachman earns chance at Queensland Derby

The Gerald Ryan trainer three year old Bachman has earned himself a chance to run in the Group 1 $600,000 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben on June 6 after an improved performance at Rosehill last Saturday.

Bachman has been struggling to fine his good two year old form but Ryan was encouraged by the way he finished off his race on Saturday when third with Jason Collett on top in the Group 3 $150,000 Blacktown Workers Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) at Rosehill and is looking forward to stepping him up distance when he heads to Queensland.

“Jason Collett said it took him the first part of the race to get into his rhythm which tells me he is looking for further,” Ryan told AAP.

“He will step up to the 2000 metres in the Grand Prix Stakes in two weeks and go another two weeks to the Derby.

“Until the Guineas we weren’t sure which way to go to get to the Derby and the week delay didn’t help.

“But he has shown he wants the extra distance so that’s what we’ll do.”

Ryan has picked out the Group 3 $150,000 Mullins Lawyers Grand Prix Stakes (2000m) at Doomben on May 23 as Bachman’s lead up run into the Queensland Derby.

Bachman showed plenty of promise in his two year old season and after winning the Group 3 $150,000 The Schweppervescence (1400m) at Rosehill during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival, Ryan ran the All American colt in the Group 1 $400,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

Bachman was sent out as one of the top fancies in the Champagne Stakes but failed to perform and only beat one runner home to finish ninth to Go Indy Go.

At his next five starts since as a three year old Bachman has failed to enter the winner’s stall but last Saturday’s run has Ryan thinking that he is back on track to finding some good form.

In early Queensland Derby betting with Ladbrokes.com.au, Bachmann is marked as a $26 chance with the Chris Waller trained Sadler’s Lake heading the market order at $8 following his all the way win in the Group 3 $125,000 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Waller also provides the second favourite Quick Strike at $8.50 with South Australian Derby runner up Werther the next in the market at $9.
