At the end of last year there’s no doubt the number one jockey in the apprentice world was Chad Schofield.

He’d just ridden a bag of winners and he almost owned the media for a period when everyone wanted a piece of him.

If you cast your mind back only a matter of weeks before that it was a very different story.

Katelyn Mallyon was the name on everybody’s lips and this girl shaped as being something special.

It’s not like she’s gone anywhere, she’s still riding well and those that matter are certainly still taking notice.

Tomorrow at Caulfield though she has a chance to once again put her name up in lights with her ride on the Robbie Griffiths trained mare Avionics.

The six year old has six wins so far in her career but finding the seventh has proved a little more difficult.

Twice now she’s dashed home over the final stages only to pull up fractionally short of the top three.

Griffiths believes things are in her favour tomorrow though and Mallyon has a fair bit of pressure to succeed.

“She has drawn barrier one and gets a chance with a three-kilo claim for Katelyn to be amongst the action again,” Griffiths said.

“She has been knocking on the door but hasn’t had a lot of luck so hopefully the breaks come her way on Saturday and she can get one on the board.”

The claim is crucial as it brings the horses weight down to 57kg over the 1200m of the Robert Hunter Handicap.

She does look like a good prospect too given that last start despite missing the kick she only finished half a length away in fourth.

Before that only a long neck separated her from the money when first up over 1200m at Moonee Valley.

All in all this is a crucial ride in the upward spiral of Mallyon and you can bet there will be plenty of eyes watching how she performs.

Mallyon currently sits 16th on the state jockeys table with 32 wins since August.

She’s further down the order in 23rd on the city table with just the six wins but were she to have capitalised on a few more of her 15 second placings things could look even better.

Tomorrow at Caulfield she has a great chance to improve though with a healthy book of five rides.
