Australian Guineas Attracts 113 Quality Nominations

Trainer Peter Snowden has made his intentions to run Benfica in this year’s Australian Guineas known by including him in the race’s nominations.

The Australian Guineas is due to run at Flemington on March 3.

Benfica has not had a run since his dominate campaign at the Brisbane winter carnival last year, where he won both the Listed Hampden Stakes and the Group 1 TJ Smith.

Regular jockey Kerrin McEvoy believes the Lonhro colt is well prepared to make his autumn debut in the Listed Zedative Stakes at Caulfield tomorrow.

“He’s come back nicely,” McEvoy said.

“He’s a nice horse going to look to get over a bit further, but we’ll hopefully see him perform well fresh.”

Danny O’Brien’s Adamantium, who is also due to line up for tomorrow’s Zedative Stakes, is amongst the 113 nominations for the Australian Guineas.

Adamantium has won two of his six race starts and has earned more than $110,000 in prize money.

The Elusive City colt finished fifth in his last start in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last October behind Sepoy.

“He’s a lovely style of colt. He’s a horse we kept to six furlongs in the spring but he’s probably more of a miler,” O’Brien said.

“He ran fifth in the Coolmore but they outsprinted him at the clock tower although he kept coming to the line.

“He’s heading towards the Australian Guineas and the step up to the mile will suit him.”

Mosheen, Plucky Belle, Galah and Motorised are also included in the Australian Guineas nominations.
