Atomic Force Rocks The Galaxy

In a big day of upsets at Randwick Racecourse The Galaxy was again claimed by an outsider with Atomic Force charging to victory.

All but one of the field was more fancied coming into the race but that didn’t stop a confident ride from Tim Clark giving him another Group 1 victory to go with his Doncaster Mile win the race previous.

Atomic Force sat two wide behind the leaders up to the turn before shooting wide and getting the prime run down the middle of the track.

He shot to the lead early in the straight but with 300m to go was no certainty with Thankgodoyu’rehere making big ground down the inside.

He found the going too tough though and the better surface allowed Atomic Force to kick clear and win by a space with Thankgodyou’rehere losing no friends with a strong second ahead of Cardinal Virtue third.

The win sparked emotional scenes on the side of the course with connections overwhelmed at the realisation of what they had just achieved.

It’s a huge win for Darren Smith who doesn’t always have winning chances in Group races but he deserves this after investing plenty of work into Atomic Force.

“The horse is going terrific,” Smith said.

“It’s my first group one.”

“We’ve had some handy horses but we’ve never been quite able to get there,” he said.

For Tim Clark the true acknowledgment of what he’s achieved today won’t sink in for a long time.

“As far out as the 600m he has the race one,” Clark said.

“It’s a huge thrill and a huge buzz and I’m sure it’s going to do my career the world of good.”
