Anthony Cummings has won his first SA Derby with Shadows In The Sun

Anthony Cummings’ Shadows In The Sun produced a wonderful display of his staying ability by winning the Group 1 SA Derby by almost a length today.

Shadows In The Sun won the race ahead of Echoes Of Heaven and Lalla Rookh.

The win was the first SA Derby victory for trainer Anthony Cummings.

The race began with Shadows Of The Sun charging across from barrier ten to take the lead on the rail from the early stages of the race.

The three-year-old gelding held his lead at the home turn and failed to tire as he stormed home to win his first Group 1 race.

This was the horse’s third win from 18 starts, with the victory adding a much needed $222,500 to Shadows In The Sun’s prize earnings.

The race favourite Right Of Refusal failed to produce the expected winning performance, instead finishing 14th in a field of 17.

Before the race Right Of Refusal’s trainer Nigel Blackiston felt that his horse was in with a large winning chance.

“From day one at home he was the most laid back horse,” Blackiston said.

“He’s a really lovely horse. He sleeps at home all day and goes about his business like a real professional.”

Far from the race favourite, Shadows In The Sun was paying odds of $21 to win the $350,000 race.

The SA Derby was won in 2 minutes and 39.88 seconds.
