Trainer Robbie Griffiths has confirmed that talented mare Angelic Light is set to return to the races in the 2015 McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 5.

Angelic Light was sent to the spelling paddock after she found to have suffered a slight tendon issue following her slightly disappointing seventh behind Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 27, but she has now returned to work ahead of the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival.

Griffiths told AAP that Angelic Light had taken no long-term harm from the tendon problem and he is hopeful that she will be ready to defend her title in the McEwen Stakes before she returns to Group 1 level for the Moir Stakes over the same track and distance on October 2.

“We’re hoping to kick her off in the McEwen on the fifth of September, subject to whether her fitness levels are ready for that,” Griffiths said.

“She’s been a little behind after we had a little hiccup in the late autumn heading towards Adelaide.

“She did a little pace work during the week and she seems well so we’re hoping we’re on target for September 5, which will be a lead-in to the Group One Moir Stakes.

“She’s certainly very well and the recent scans are perfect.

“It’s just a question of whether we’re behind the eight-ball with fitness.”

Angelic Light stamped herself as a mare to watch during her autumn campaign in 2013 that was highlighted by a second place finish behind Platelet in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) at Morphettville, but she suffered a tendon injury that saw her miss over a year of racing.

The Holy Roman Emperor mare returned to racing with a credible third place finish in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on August 23 last year and she recorded a massive upset win over Lankan Rupee in the McEwen Stakes at the same venue on September 6 before she went on to run extremely well in both the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) on September 26 and Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) on October 24 before she was beaten as favourite in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 22.

Angelic Light has scored five wins from her 17 race starts and he has accumulated over $600,000 in prizemoney for connections.
