Angel Of Mercy regains winning form in Lord Mayor’s Cup

A slick ride by jockey Tim Bell saw Angel Of Mercy regain her winning form in the Group 3 $125,000 Programmed Property Services Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) at Doomben today.

Angel Of Mercy was backing up after finishing eighth in last week’s Group 1 $500,000 Titan Energy Services Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben and the drop in class helped her return to the winner’s stall.

Bell had settled Angel Of Mercy out the back of the field and waited until the 600m before making a move on the five year old and once she gained a run in between horses and shot to the front at the 100m.

Angel Of Mercy ($4.80) looked likely to score a clear cut win before Wistful ($3.20 favourite) with Kerrin McEvoy riding hard started to take ground away from the Gerald Ryan trained mare close to the line.

Cameo ($6), stablemate of the runner up also ran on well from back in the field to claim third spot.

Stable representative Sterling Alexiou said that Bell rode exactly to instructions which were to let the mare settle back in the field and then give her the opportunity to run to the line.

“He gave her twelve out ten ride and she did the job,” Alexiou said.

“She hit a heavy track at the Gold Coast and Damian Browne hoped off her last week and said that she just didn’t run the 2000m.”

Today’s win was Angel Of Mercy’s sixth for the Ryan stable but she is headed to the broodmare’s sale at the Magic Millions complex at the Gold Coast on Wednesday.

“She is going to the broodmare’s sale on Wednesday,” Alexiou said.
