In scenes reminiscent of Linton’s remarkable Stradbroke Handicap win last weekend, long-shot chance Anagold produced a stunning rails run to claim the biggest win of her career in the $200,000 Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) today.

Despite having poor lead-up form and jumping at the huge price of $53.10, the four-year-old mare proved the strongest in the finish to score in a photo from the fast-finishing High Kin.

There were suggestions earlier in the day that the inside ground was suspect but fortunately for connections jockey Tony Pattillo ignored those concerns.

Pattillo never left the fence aboard the daughter of Anabaa who was second last approaching the turn. As the more fancied runners made their runs out wide, Anagold slipped up the inside, quickly making ground to assume the lead in the dying stages of the short Ipswich straight.

It was the second Ipswich Cup win for Pattillo who won the race aboard Forest Jim in 2005 and the hoop admitted delight at how things panned out today.

“The heaven’s opened, you know, you get the luck,” Pattillo said.

“It wasn’t a pipe dream, we were a good chance in the race and we won it. I’ll go home happy, it’s been a long time coming.”

The Bryan Guy-trained Anagold has now won six of 27 starts and collected more than $245,000 in prizemoney.

Guy praised the ride of Pattillo and said it was pleasing to see a long-range plan to target the race pay off for connections.

“This is the race we’ve been setting her for, and I said to them [the owners] we’ll be ready and we’ll be spot on for the Ipswich Cup,” Guy said.

Brian Smith’s consistent stayer Za Magic produced a tough run to hang on for third after leading for the majority of the race.

Italian import Voila Ici was a clear $4.80 favourite at race jump but failed to defy history, labouring in the straight under his hefty 60kg impost to finish in fifth position.
