Promising Mornington trainer Matt Laurie is eyeing off the South Australian Oaks with the lightly raced Two Sugars after it won the Eems Tech Hcp (1600m) at Moonee Valley last night.

The well named daughter of Dash For Cash and Miss Capucino, despite carrying 59kg, led throughout to win her third race in four starts.

The victory gave Laurie a day-night double having won the last race at Mornington with Jazz King in a Class 1 three hours earlier.

It also gave Michael Rodd the third leg of a winning treble after wins aboard It’s Crunch Time and Weekend Special earlier in the night.

The race was delayed when Annario reared up at the barrier hurting itself as well as Simple Choice – both were late scratchings.

Those horses had been drawn inside Two Sugars and it meant Rodd only needed to cross one horse to lead.

He did that and set a slow pace ahead of Katen Ruby and Boulevard Betty (three wide).

No pressure came on until the 500m mark when Boulevard Betty moved up with Gig.

Dayita who settled behind the leader on the rail was pushed into the running rail at the home turn by the weakening Boulevard Betty and lost all chance.

Two Sugars burst away before French Tang, who had settled last, ran on for second with Gig hanging on for third.

“I didn’t expect her to win like that, she looks pretty exciting,” Laurie said.

“I was a bit worried she wouldn’t have that turn of foot at this stage.

“I am thinking she will make an S A Oaks type of filly, it is a great result.

“I will tip her out now and have a shot at that.

“She is a pretty strong filly and I was comfortable to put a senior jockey on (despite 59kg).

The Group1 $350,000 2012 Schweppes S A Oaks (2000m) will be run on April 28 at Morphettville.
