After winning on debut Alma’s Fury had a rather large run of outs for trainer Paul Murray.

In fact the three year old gelding went 13 in a row without a victory.

It was a campaign geared towards the Queensland Derby and whilst he did do enough to make the field it wasn’t to be as he trailed in second last.

He was given a long spell after that and Murray decided to change tact with the horse this preparation.

Instead of persisting as a stayer he said he’d keep him at the distances where he’d shown the most potential.

“We tried to get him up to the staying distances before but for me he just over races,” Murray said.

“He’s always shown us a lot, you’ve just got to try them as three year old to get them up to the Derby distances, you can always come back.”

It’s a tactic that’s worked flawlessly so far this campaign, Alma’s Fury unbeaten from three starts.

He won over 1400m at Kembla Grange first up before winning over 1500m twice at Rosehill.

“That’s what he’s shown us this time he’s a real 1400m, 1500m horse,” Murray said.

This Saturday he’s due to run in the Cabramatta Mile over 1600m at Warwick Farm, a distance that will test him once again.

His campaign at this stage is geared towards a shot at the Doncaster so it’s important  he does get the trip comfortably enough.

Murray is wary of getting there too soon with the horse though and admits it may not be the best race for him at this stage of his prep.

“There wasn’t much around, there was only that one or Canterbury on the 11th but I just don’t think Canterbury would suit him,” he said.

“I’m still up in the air whether ill run or not, I still want to keep him fresh for the Apollo Stakes.”

Murray is currently in New Zealand for the yearling sales and says he’s confident of picking up a couple of nice types despite being out bid on each lot so far.
