Aeronautical is set to resume in the Hall Chadwick Handicap at Rosehill tomorrow after a 14 week spell.

The three-year-old gelding is best known for his participation in the Group 1 Golden Rose and the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes, where he finished last in both races.

While he finished at the tail of the field, his last start finish was just 1.6 lengths behind winner Foxwedge.

Trainer Lionel Cohen said both his last two race performances were not a true indication of Aeronautical’s true ability.

“The Golden Rose ended up as a bit of a mix up in that we found ourselves out front for a while… so it’s hard to read into that race,” Cohen said.

“He made up a lot of ground and he did it in good time.”

Cohen said the Encosta De Lago gelding has progressed well since being spelled.

“We’re very happy where he is, he works good and he’ll run a good race tomorrow,” he said.

“He’s just had a nice solid grounding.”

Aeronautical finished first in an encouraging barrier trial at Rosehill on January 6, where he was positioned forward in the race for one of the first times in his career.

“The reason he’s gone back in his runs is he’s never had a good barrier draw,” Cohen said,

“It was my choice to run him from behind.

“(But) I would think he can go handier.

“I want to give him a little bit of chance in the running.”

Aeronautical was also nominated for the Listed Canterbury Classic last Saturday, however, Cohen opted to save him for tomorrow’s run.

“Had we run there we would have been out in the weights against every runner in the race,” he said.

“Tomorrow he has more chance in the weights and more chance all round.”

Cohen is yet to map out an autumn campaign for Aeronautical but is looking towards the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes on February 18, as well as races like the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas.

“I just want to get past tomorrow,” Cohen said.

“Ideally I would like to have a crack at the Guineas, they only come around once.”
