Gai Waterhouse-trained Adrift upset a host of talented fillies to score an impressive win over First Seal in the 2015 Light Fingers Stakes at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

There was a sprinkling of support for Adrift in the lead-up to the Light Fingers Stakes, but still started at odds of over $50, while punters were very keen to back First Seal, Golden Slipper winner Mossfun and Kris Lees-trained Onemorezeta.

Press Report, Mossfun and Onemorezeta battled for the lead in the early stages of the Light Fingers Stakes and the trio all failed to respond when asked for an extra effort, while Adrift took up the running at the 250 metre mark.

First Seal found clear running in the final stages of the race and she hit the line strongly in a promising first-up effort, but she was unable to catch Adrift, who stamped herself as one of the most talented fillies in the country with the professional victory.

Adrift was having just her fourth race start in the Light Fingers Stakes and is likely to follow a path towards races like the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 28 and the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 11, while she has also been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

First Seal was far from disgraced first-up and she is set to contest the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on February 28 before she takes on the older mares for the first time in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 14.

Mossfun was having her first race start since she scored a memorable win in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens in April last year and she showed plenty of early speed, but she tired late and finished sixth.

Trainer Jason Coyle said earlier in the week that the lightly-raced Slightly Sweet would not produce her best form until she got over a longer trip, but she hit the line strongly to finish an eye-catching third.

Peggy Jean failed to fire in both the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, but she looks to have come up for the autumn and finished a credible fourth.
