Adelaide Cup Target For Western Jewel

Perth Cup champion Western Jewel looks likely to be given a shot at a capital city cups double with a trip to Adelaide during the autumn.

Owner Bob Peters has picked out the $400,000 Adelaide Cup on March 12 after the mares impressive victory in Perth’s premier staying event.

The big drawcard as well as the money and title in Adelaide is the fact it’s one of the few cups still run over the 3200m distance.

Despite the Perth Cup triumph being Western Jewels first win over 2400m the team are keen to keep her up over ground.

They may have no other choice than the Adelaide Cup depending on how the handicapper treats her at home.

If she were to stay put it would be for the $130,000 Bunbury Cup over 2200m and the $100,000 Pinjarra Cup over 2300m.

“There are not many races which have suitable distances for her over the next six months,” Peters said.

“If she doesn’t get too harshly penalised then she may be able to compete in the Bunbury and Pinjarra Cups.”

In addition to the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville Western Jewel would also run in the Sir Reims Plate over 2600m.

Making the trip to South Australia is of no concern to Peters, he’s done it before with great success.

In 1995 and 1998 he won the Goodwood Handicap with Centisle and Spectrum and in 1996 he won the SA oaks with Miss Margaret.

It would also be a big achievement for trainer Grant Williams who created history by being the first dual license trainer (gallops & harness) to win the Perth Cup.
