Star import Manighar could be given the chance to defend his title in the Group 1 $2.25 million BMW (2400m) at Rosehill in April after being confirmed as one of 63 horses nominated  for the prestigious staying feature.

The seven-year-old was one of the stars of last year’s Autumn Carnival, winning a Group 1 treble in the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes and the BMW.

After a disappointing spring campaign ended prematurely due to injury, Manighar delivered some promising early signs he can again be a force this autumn with a strong jump-out performance on Tuesday.

Trainer Peter Moody said he was happy with the hit-out but is yet to determine plans for the French import.

One of the more surprising entrants is Golden Slipper winner Pierro.

While it may only be a case of Gai Waterhouse keeping her options as open as possible, the three-year-old stepping up to 2400m would certainly generate plenty of interest.

Waterhouse has nominated 12 gallopers including fellow spruik colt Proisir, Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente and Group 1-winning import Glencadam Gold.

Pierro stands out among the three-year-olds entered but there is no shortage of gallopers from his age group.

Anthony Cummings is setting the bar high with Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar and is hopeful he can transfer his staying success into open company.

New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel will return for another Australian campaign after a strong spring preparation that included wins in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes and the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.

Other notable entries include Melbourne Cup fourth Kelinni, Tony McEvoy’s German import Le Roi and Doomben Cup winner Mawingo.
