Hay List will most likely bypass the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington next month after being allocated 58.5 kilograms for the race.

Trainer John McNair has voiced his disgust at the weight, which would see him attempt to be the first horse to carry 58.5 or more kilograms to victory since 1959.

The handicapper’s decision to slug Hay List with such a high weight has led McNair to say he would like to keep Hay List away from Melbourne for the rest of the carnival.

However, the decision of where to run is ultimately up to managing owner Terry Davenport.

“To my mind I wouldn’t only not run (in the Newmarket), I wouldn’t go back to Melbourne this year if it was my decision,” McNair said.

“But it is not my decision. It is Terry’s decision.”

The trainer is going to strongly advise against running Hay List in the Newmarket Handicap on March 10.

“I don’t own the horse and I have got to do as I am told but I will be doing everything in my power to advise not to run him,” he said.

“I can’t see the point in busting the poor horse’s guts to run a good second, third or fourth.”

Davenport admitted that he was yet to make a final decision on Hay List’s involvement in the race.

“We haven’t got to that stage yet,” he said.

“I’m still getting over the shock.

“It is disappointing mostly because so much effort goes into getting there and you get something that is a bit hard to explain.”

Hay List began his autumn campaign in the Lightning Stakes on February 18, where he finished second to the great Black Caviar.

The Statue Of Liberty gelding has won 14 of his 21 career starts and has earned more than $1.85 million in prize money.
