2500m Victoria Derby Trip To Suit Sangster

Sangster is a strong Victoria Derby chance

Sangster was picked as a strong Victoria Derby chance at the start of the spring carnival and now with only a few days to go to the race that’s still the case.

Last start Sangster was just caught on the line by the impressive Sabrage and he’ll be among the main dangers come this Saturday at Flemington as well.

Of course the major threat for all of them though is Manawanui, he’s got the class and if he can stay the trip he’s probably a shoe in.

That being said though he’s no certainty to run out the 2500m and that leaves the door open for Sangster to run a big race.

He’s the type of horse that looks most likely to take improvement from the jump in distance as what he lacks in a final sprint he makes up for in dour staying ability.

With that in mind it could be tough to get a read on him during trackwork and trainer Trent Busuttin reflects that lack of confidence.

He worked him in company with Sabrage earlier this morning and he wasn’t too sure just what to take out of it.

“He worked over 2000m this morning, they quicken up at the 1200m and then again at the 600m,” he said.

“Mike’s horse probably worked a touch stronger on the line.

“He (Sangster) sat four or five behind him (Sabrage) the whole way, did a fair bit of work to pick him up and that showed on the line.

“Hugh Bowman said he was happy with the work, satisfactory without being excellent.”

As mentioned earlier the one big advantage he does look to hold is being able to run out the journey and the Victoria Derby has been the target all campaign.

“We sat down at the start of the prep and set out a campaign to get some miles in his legs to prepare for the Derby,” Busuttin said.

“He’s coped with the racing well and held his condition right the way through.”

While he didn’t exactly set the world on fire this morning then he’s fit, he’s racing well and he’s a real chance come Saturday afternoon.

“He’s a very genuine horse, we’d just like something to chase,” he said.
