2017 South Australian Derby Day Results: Volatile Mix Wins the Feature

Some of the country’s best horses will be on show at Morphettville Racecourse for 2017 South Australian Derby Day this afternoon; highlighted by the Group 1 feature race for three-year-old stayers.

A total of eight races with take place on 2017 South Australian Derby Day and you can keep up to date with results as they happen at HorseRacing.com.au.

2017 South Australian Derby results will begin with the running of the Autumn Series Final (1400m) at 12:35pm and will officially draw to a close after the Provincial Super Series Final (1800m) at 5pm.

Race 1 (12:35pm) Autumn Series Final Results

Roselli Sting has completed a perfectly-timed sprint in the final straight at Morphettville to win the Autumn Series Final (1400m).

Race favourite Act Of Valour strode clear of his rivals with 200m to run, but jockey Jamie Kah went for the whip and the perfect moment for Roselli Sting to get the bob on the line; posting a second-consecutive race win.

Roughie Sacred Seal enjoyed a run within the field of fourteen in transit and was produced late to finish a gallant third.

Race 2 (1:10pm) Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes Results

Time Awaits has maintained a strong sprint in the final straight to post her second career black type victory in this afternoon’s Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Jockey Damien Thornton settled Time Awaits in an ideal position just behind the speed as Broadband, Casino Fourteen and Silverhawk dictated the early pace.

Offered a clear line upon arriving at the final straight, the Nicconi filly locked in a fierce sprint battle with a wall of horses, but poked a neck clear by the time the field hit the line.

Race 3 (1:50pm) Drink Driving? Grow Up Handicap Results

Mulder has completed a smart performance to post an impressive upset victory in the MAC Drink Driving? Grow Up Handicap (1050m) this afternoon.

Having found a good position two pairs off the pace of early leader My Snip, Mulder cut the corner leading into the final straight at Morphettville and pulled clear of his rivals; hitting the line more than a length ahead of stakes winner Samara Dancer.

Having received the greatest market share of attention from punters in the hours leading up to jump, Sacred Sham was unable to make up the necessary ground late and finished third.

Race 4 (2:30pm) SA Sprint Series Final Results

Idatwo opened at odds of $101 on Wednesday, was backed into a $26 quote and has stormed home to win Race 4 on South Australian Derby Day.

Idatwo was settled towards the tail of the field in this afternoon’s race, but mustered a huge turn of foot in the final straight to thunder home and beat runaway leader Itz Invincible on the line.

Rock Status worked to the line well to round out the minor placings in the SA Sprint.

Race 5 (3:10pm) SouthAustralia.com Handicap Results

Ashlor has completed a strong performance to win Race 5 on 2017 South Australian Derby Day.

The Hard Spun gelding ran a credible fifth in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) last weekend and produced a perfectly-timed turn of foot to pull clear and maintain a strong-enough sprint to withstand a late surge from Benz.

A line of horses stormed the line in the scramble for third place, however it was This Kid Rocks who managed to get the bob and complete the minors.

Race 6 (3:50pm) Listed Adelaide Guineas Results

Rank outsider Vienna Miss has maintained to the line well to beat resounding favourite Petition in this afternoon’s Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m).

The $101 shot enjoyed a good run in transit close to the pace and the ride of jockey Katelyn Mallyon played a crucial role after the horse was able to open a gap in the final straight and just beat Petition to the line.

Race 7 (4:25pm) Group 1 South Australian Derby Results

Volatile Mix has produced a superior staying effort to win the featured Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) this afternoon.

Volatile Mix’s win ensured that trainer Darren Weir and jockey John Allen posted a second-consecutive win in the race after the pair combined with Howard Be Thy Name to take out the three-year-old feature in 2016.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Ruthven ran a big race to finish a close second, while clear favourite Odeon tired late to place third.

Race 8 (5:00pm) Provincial Super Series Final Results

The card closer on SA  Derby Day was won in an upset by Tsaritsyn who came with a flying late run down the middle of the track.

Jockey Jamie Kah, who also won the first at Morphettville, was on the David Jolly-trained son of Street Sense who continued his good record at the track, getting home late in the last over Soaring High (2nd) and Holy Juan (3rd).
