Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller has nine three-year-olds among the ninety-eight nominations for the 2017 Group 1 $600,000 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 10.

Waller is giving himself a great chance to collect his second Queensland Derby trophy after taking out the blue riband classic for the three year olds with Hawkspur in 2013.

Heading Waller’s Queensland Derby assault is the well performed Veladero who was placed at his last two starts during the Sydney Autumn Carnival with a third to Acatour in the Group 3 $200,000 Chine Horse Club Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 1 followed by a second to Mongolian Wolf in the Group 3 $150,000 Mostyn Copper Group Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick aa fortnight later.

Waller’s other Queensland Derby nominations are Black On Gold, Monasterio, Octavian Augustus, Sizzling Bullet, Smooth Whiskey, Solo Heart, Tumultuous and Wu Gok.

Victoria’s leading trainer Darren Weir also has multiple Queensland Derby nominations with former Kiwi three year old Mongolian Wolf heading the team of six.

Mongolian Wolf was having his first start for Weir when he stormed home to win the Frank Packer Plate and looks a likely type for the Queensland Derby.

Weir’s other entries are Bit Of A Lad, Rockstar Rebel, Think Babe, Truly High and Violate.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig have four horses among the nominations, All America gelding All Out Of Love and three of the fourteen fillies entered for the Queensland Derby, Harlow Gold, Miss Strathallan and Sebring Dream.

Tulloch Lodge co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have only one nominated, More Than Ready gelding San Pablo and Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher’s sole entry is Ruthven.

Flemington based trainer Mike Moroney will also head to the Sunshine State with plenty of numbers after nominating twelve three year olds for the Queensland Derby.

The first acceptances for the Queensland Derby are due on Wednesday May 31 with the final field to be released on Wednsday June 7, 2017.
