The time-honoured Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) is the highlight of today’s racing, but a further three Group 3 races are also set to be run and won on the talent-rich card.

The action on 2017 Newcastle Cup Day is set to get underway with the running of the Macka’s Australian Black Angus Beef Class 2 Handicap (1600m) at 12:50pm, while the first black type race of the day will be contested when eleven three-year-olds step out for the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at 3:20pm.

2017 Newcastle Cup Day Results

Race 1 (12:50m) Macka’s Australia Black Angus Beef Class 2 Plate Results

Godolphin gelding Animalia has completed an impressive performance to comfortable win Race 1 on Newcastle Cup Day.

Animalia drifted in betting markets in the minutes leading up to jump, but still left a clear favourite and did his chances of success no harm when taking an ideal position in transit on the heels of early leader Tahsin.

Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, the son of Animal Kingdom mustered a superior turn of foot to stride clear of his rivals and find the line comfortably ahead of an impressive Static Lift.

  • 1st – Animalia
  • 2nd – Static Lift
  • 3rd – Concessions

Race 2 (1:25pm) Harry Meyn Foundation BM69 Handicap Results

Bella Galeano has produced a perfectly-timed sprint to win the Harry Meyn Foundation BM69 this afternoon.

Bella Galeano was settled in an ideal position in transit by jockey Kerrin McEvoy, on the heels of early leaders Bon Equus and Sakhumzi.

Experiencing a carefree run and settling into a good rhythm, the Don Eduardo mare locked in a fierce sprint battle with Sakhumzi in the final straight, but managed to poke a head clear in the final strides of the race to post only her third career win.

  • 1st – Bella Galeano
  • 2nd – Bon Equus
  • 3rd – Sakhumzi

Race 3 (2:05pm) Simplot CG&E Maiden Plate Results

Renewal has mustered a superior turn of foot to beat a small but smart field of maiden-class sprinters to the line in Race 3.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla settled the debutant towards the tail of the field as Dexluther and All Too Huiying took up the early running; setting a fair tempo across the back straight and approaching the turn.

Allowing the horse plenty of time to balance upon arriving at the final straight, Avdulla was greeted with a strong turn of foot as Renewal found little issue in putting away his rivals.

  • 1st – Renewal
  • 2nd – Smooth Whiskey
  • 3rd – All Too Huiying

Race 4 (2:40pm) Suez F&M Maiden Plate Results

Koonunga has held on to post a half-length win over Flying Rose in Race 4 on Newcastle Cup Day.

Koonunga jumped a $21 chances in betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, but did her chances of winning the race no harm when jumping well and taking a positive position in transit just behind the early pace of Princess Kandis.

Working towards the fore of the field upon arriving at the final straight, the Not A Single Doubt mare pulled clear and sustained a strong-enough run to beat a fast-finishing Flying Rose; Riva Romance boxing on well for third.

  • 1st – Koonunga
  • 2nd – Flying Rose
  • 3rd – Riva Romance

Race 5 (3:20pm) Group 3 Spring Stakes Results

Godolphin colt Astoria has mustered a big turn of foot in the final 200m to win the Group 3 Spring Stakes this afternoon.

Jockey Tye Angland elected to settled Astoria at the tail of the Spring Stakes field after jumping only fairly as Runaway, Dissolution and Hypnotist traded early blows on pace.

Faced with a wall of horses and seemingly too much to do when the field straightened, Angland found a gap between runners and was greeted with a big sprint as Astoria found little issue in overcoming his rivals.

  • 1st – Astoria
  • 2nd – Merovee
  • 3rd – Primitivo

Race 6 (3:55pm) Group 3 Cameron Handicap Results

Got Unders has completed a perfectly-timed sprint to win the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) this afternoon.

The Southern Image was all but forgotten in Cameron Handicap betting markets prior to jump, but did his chances of reversing the trend no harm when he found an ideal position in transit on the heels of early leaders Special Missile and Sound Proposition.

A resounding favourite, Special Missile was the first beaten turning for home and Got Unders took advantage of ideal positioning; poking clear of Sound Proposition in the final strides to the race to claim a career-best result.

  • 1st – Got Unders
  • 2nd – Sound Proposition
  • 3rd – Spectroscope

Race 7 (4:35pm) Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup Results

Broadside has led from start to finish to record a comfortable win in the Newcastle Gold Cup this afternoon.

The Raise The Flag gelding was immediately led to the pace by jockey Tim Clark this afternoon and led the smart field of stayers past the post the first time; setting a fair tempo in transit.

Experiencing a carefree run in transit, Broadside kicked clear of his rivals when the field straightened and was too strong through the final 300m; savaging the line to claim a maiden win at black type level.

  • 1st – Broadside
  • 2nd – Auvray
  • 2nd – Admiral Jello

Race 8 (5:10pm) Group 3 Tibbie Stakes Results

Hugh Bowman has delivered a typically brilliant ride aboard Zanbagh to win the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m); the final race on 2017 Newcastle Cup Day.

Zanbagh was charged with overcoming the outside barrier this afternoon, but jumped well and found a good position within the field of fifteen mares.

Enjoying a reasonably carefree run in transit, the Bernardini mare did have some work to get through upon arriving at the final straight wide and blocked, but found a gap between runners and stormed through; savaging the line for a comfortable win.

  • 1st – Zanbagh
  • 2nd – Perfect Rhyme
  • 3rd – Hetty Heights
