2017 Golden Slipper Results: She Will Reign Wins

The 2017 Golden Slipper results will be updated throughout the afternoon at horseracing.com.au and you can stay up to date with what will be a simply outstanding day of racing.

It has been a very wet week in Sydney and the Rosehill Gardens track will be very heavy, but that has not stopped outstanding fields being assembled for all five Group 1 events on the Golden Slipper Day card.

The Golden Slipper is the obvious highlight and we are set for one of the most open editions of the race in recent memory.

Houtzen is currently on top of the 2017 Golden Slipper betting market with Ladbrokes at a quote of $3.90, but there has also been money for Catchy ($6), She Will Reign ($7), Frolic ($8.50) and Tulip ($9.50).

The other highlight is the appearance of Winx in the George Ryder Stakes.

The star mare is obviously a dominant favourite to record her 16th straight victory, but there has been money for Chautauqua to record one of the biggest upsets of the year.

The Ranvet Stakes, Rosehill Guineas and The Galaxy are the other Group 1 events on the card and we can’t wait for an excellent day of racing to get underway.

 Race 9 (5:30pm) – $150,000 Group 3 Black Epona Stakes Results

The lightly-raced Consommateur relished the heavy conditions to take out the 2017 Black Epona Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

Ambience kicked clear at the top of the straight and looked a chance to win her first race since the 2015 Wakeful Stakes, but she tired in the final stages and Consommateur finished over the top of her late.

  • 1st: Consommateur
  • 2nd: Ambience
  • 3rd: Top Of My List

 Race 8 (4:50pm) – $700,000 Group 1 The Galaxy Results

Russian Revolution fought-off stablemate Redzel and a gallant Jungle Edge to win the 2017 The Galaxy at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

There was plenty of drama in the lead-up to The Galaxy as Russian Revolution sweated up and lost a shoe, but punters were still keen to throw their support behind the talented colt.

Redzel kicked clear of Jungle Edge at the top of the straight and looked as though he had the race won, but Russian Revolution kept finding the line to record a very big win.

  • 1st: Russian Revolution
  • 2nd: Redzel
  • 3rd: Jungle Edge

She Will Reign bounced back from her Reisling Stakes defeat to record an impressive win in the 2017 Golden Slipper.

Houtzen took up the running in the early stages of the race and had plenty of horses off the bit early, but was quickly picked up by She Will Reign.

She Will Reign was left in front a long way from home, but she always looked the winner and she held-off Frolic and Menari to deliver trainer Gary Portelli the biggest win of his training career.

  • 1st: She Will Reign
  • 2nd: Frolic
  • 3rd: Menari

New Zealand Derby winner Gingernuts outstayed his rivals to record a tough win in the 2017 Rosehill Guineas this afternoon.

Gingernuts was settled towards the tail of the field, but jockey Opie Busson got going a long way from home and he circled the field.

Gingernuts hit the front at the 200 metre mark and there is no doubt that he tired late, but he was still able to hold-off Inference late to claim victory.

  • 1st: Gingernuts
  • 2nd: Inference
  • 3rd: So Si Bon

Winx cruised to another effortless victory in the 2017 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

Winx was slightly slow out of the gates and jockey Hugh Bowman elected to keep her wide in the early stages of the race.

The daughter of Street Cry cruised into the race and she carted herself to the lead without being asked for an extra effort.

Le Romain did her best, but Winx was absolutely dominant in the final stages and she put a big gap on both Le Romain and Chautauqua.

  • 1st: Winx
  • 2nd: Le Romain
  • 3rd: Chautauqua

Our Ivanhowe relished the wet conditions at Rosehill Gardens to record an impressive victory in the 2017 Ranvet Stakes this afternoon.

It was Antonio Giuseppe that took up the running in the Ranvet Stakes and he took plenty of catching, but Our Ivanhowe got through the mud and finished over the top of the leader to claim his second Australian Group 1 victory.

Hartnell flew home from the tail of the field for second, but he was no match for Our Ivanhowe in the final stages of the race.

  • 1st: Our Ivanhowe
  • 2nd: Hartnell
  • 3rd: The United States

Race 3 (1:30pm) – $125,000 Listed Darby Munro Stakes Results

Derryn stormed home down the middle of the Rosehill Gardens straight to record an impressive win in the 2017 Darby Munro Stakes.

Regan Bayliss settled Derryn at the tail of the field and he found a lovely rhythm before he quickly picked up the rest of the Darby Munro Stakes field when asked for an extra effort.

Trainer David Hayes was delighted to see Derryn handle the heavy conditions in the Darby Munro Stakes and he confirmed that he will have his next race start in the Arrowfield Stakes.

  • 1st: Derryn
  • 2nd: Crafty Cop
  • 3rd: Tactical Advantage

Craig Williams positioned Raiment right on the speed in the early stages of the race and she quickly put a gap on the rest of the field when asked for an extra effort.

The PJ Bell Stakes will be the next race target for Raiment following her impressive Birthday Card Stakes.

Our Century is no certainty to head to the 2017 Sydney Cup at Royal Randwick in a fortnight after he scored a narrow win over Big Duke in the N E Manion Cup at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

Our Century and Big Duke put a gap on the field in the final stages of the N E Manion Cup and it was a truly epic battle, but it was Our Century that got his nose in front in the shadows of the post.

Co-owner Nick Williams was pleased to see Big Duke take out the N E Manion Cup, but he said that the imported stayer is no certainty to back-up in the Sydney Cup in a fortnight.

There was plenty of contact between Our Century and Big Duke in the final stages of the N E Manion Cup and the connections of Big Duke lodged a protest.

Update:

Big Duke has been awarded the N E Manion Cup on protest to deliver trainer Darren Weir his maiden winner in Sydney.

There was not a great deal of contact between Our Century and Big Duke, but Craig Williams was insistent that it forced Big Duke out a couple of horses and Racing New South Wales stewards agreed with his assessment, ruling that Big Duke would have won if there was no contact between the two horses.

Big Duke looks set to remain in Sydney for the Sydney Cup in a fortnight, while the protest decision could change the plans of Macedon Lodge with Our Century.

  • 1st: Big Duke (On Protest)
  • 2nd: Our Century
  • 3rd: Allergic
