2017 Doomben 10,000 Nominations Feature Russian Revolution

Peter & Paul Snowden’s gun three-year-old Russian Revolution is one of the standout early entries among the 2017 Doomben 10,000 nominations taken for the May 13 feature by Racing Queensland this week.

Nominations closed for the major Group 1 races of the upcoming Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on Tuesday including those for the $700,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1200m).

Set to light-up Doomben Racecourse on Saturday May 13 as the opening elite level feature of the carnival, this year’s Doomben 10,000 attracted a total of 40 nominees.

Among them are seven three-year-olds out to join Sea Siren (2012) and Epaulette (2013) as the most recent youngsters to beat home the older gallopers at weight-for-age in the Doomben 10,000.

The latter of those, Epaulette, was the second of trainer Peter Snowden’s two previous winners along with Beaded (2011) and this season he has two entries that he co-trains in partnership with his son Paul.

The Snowdens are represented by two gun hopes including Snitzel colt Russian Revolution who led the pre-nomination Doomben 10,000 markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

A winner of five of his seven career starts to date, the up-and-comer is best known for the narrow Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) victory on a Heavy (10) Rosehill track first-up on March 18.

He was last seen finishing a brave sixth behind triple TJ Smith Stakes champion Chautauqua in that 1200m Randwick classic on April 1 and has enjoyed a subsequent trial win by over three lengths.

Runner-up to his stablemate in The Galaxy results, Redzel is also nominated for the Doomben 10,000 this winter.

The four-year-old son of Snitzel backed-up from his second in the Group 1 to return to winning form taking out the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on April 15.

The other best in the early markets is the reigning Doomben 10,000 winner Music Magnate for Sydney’s Bjorn Baker.

Apache Cat (2008-09) was the last back-to-back Doomben 10,000 champion and the bookmakers are taking no chances with Written Tycoon gelding Music Magnate to become the next.

Last winter the now $1 million earner took out the race in his first start at Doomben before failing to fire next-up when 16th in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

Music Magnate returned to winning form first-up this summer in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) and was last seen adding to his Group winning tally with success at Eagle Farm on April 29 in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m).

Darren Weir has thrown in a nomination for his stable ace Black Heart Bart, but the multiple Group 1 champion is far from a confirmed runner with Adelaide’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 20 the major target this time in.

Other key Doomben 10,000 entries include Matthew Dale’s TJ Smith Stakes third placed Fell Swoop and the Gary Moore-trained Winterbottom Stakes winner in Perth Takedown who ran fourth to Music Magnate in the Victory Stakes.

The Doomben 10,000 final acceptances close on Wednesday May 10, 2017.
