Black Heart Bart was extremely well-backed in the lead-up to the Memsie Stakes as an even money favourite and punters that took the short price on offer were never worried.

Charmed Harmony took up the running in the early stages of the Memsie Stakes and strung the field out, which played into the hands of Black Heart Bart who received a lovely trail into the race.

Black Heart Bart quickly hit the front and he cruised to the line to take out the Memsie Stakes from consistent mare Rising Romance and a brave Mahuta.

Brad Rawiller has formed an excellent partnership with Black Heart Bart and he said after the Memsie Stakes that the race could not have worked out any better for his mount.

“This horse is first-up and he has a different preparation this time in, but when I let down he was just awesome,” Rawiller said.

“It is a fine line and I was worried that something was going to come with me on my back, but with the run he had he was always going to let down and he might have ended up getting there a bit too soon.

“It helps when you are on a good horse.”

Black Heart Bart joined the Weir stable before the start of his autumn campaign and he now has two Group 1 victories and three Group 1 placings since making the move to the Warrnambool-based stable.

Weir admitted that Black Heart Bart is a very easy horse to train and he confirmed that the Memsie Stakes winner would follow a path towards the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22 and a potential clash with Winx.

“He has been a great horse for the stable and I have to thank the owners for sending him over to us,” Weir said.

“He is a pretty straightforward horse to train and that is the way that he races as well.

“It was a great win today.

“It worked out perfectly – the plan was to be in the one-one or the one-two and he landed in the one-two with the hot speed.

“He built into it great and I loved the way he ran through the line.

“He probably ran better then than he did first-up last time.

“The owners are very keen to go to the Cox Plate and we will follow a path to that.

“They just said if you are not happy along the way and you want to deviate then we are happy to do that, but we will aim towards the Cox Plate and see how far we get.”

Rising Romance returned to the races with a more than credible third, while Mahuta toughed it out right on the speed to finish third.

A host of other horses hit the line nicely in their first starts of their 2016 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, but arguably the most impressive was Mick Price-trained Tarzino.
