Royal Descent has not raced in mares company since she finished fifth in the 2014 edition of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), but since that time she has stamped herself as one of the most consistent milers in Australian racing.

The daughter of Redoute’s Choice returned to winning form with a tough victory in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 22 and she went on to finished in the placings in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September 5, the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 19 and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.

Royal Descent finished at the tail of the field in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17, but O’Sullivan told RSN that he is happy to put a line through that run and he believes that the star mare can return to winning form in the 2015 Myer Classic at Flemington this weekend.

“Royal Descent is the only one that I can really back here.

“I think we can totally overlook her Caulfield Cup run – she was beaten over 30 lengths, but she went forward, was three with no cover all the way and when it was clear that she was beaten inside the 500 she wasn’t knocked about.

“Prior to that she has stack of form and figures that have the potential to push this race beyond the level that any of these are likely to reach in their career.

“With the potential there to run to that level, she is the one that offers the appeal and $5 is a more than acceptable price.

“Form around Kermadec at weight-for-age and Preferment and horses like that reads well in a Myer, which is not a particularly strong race.

“It looks a fairly weak race compared to in years gone by and a lot of the better mares like First Seal and Noble Protector have fallen by the wayside this spring and left this race a little bit weak from historical standards.

“From barrier five there, Royal Descent looks to just fall into an ideal spot behind that lead and she is very well proven in strong run 1600 metres race.

“I don’t think Chris Waller would be running her here if he had any doubts about her ability to rebound and run something like her best form.

“She is the one that has betting appeal for me.”

Royal Descent is currently available at 2015 Myer Classic odds of $4.80 with Ladbrokes and she is on the second line of betting behind star filly Stay With Me ($4.50).
