2014 Sydney Cup Tips: Voleuse De Coeurs The Value

Voleuse De Coeurs and Sertorius are the 2014 Sydney Cup tips of Dominic Beirne; with the leading form analyst confident that the talented duo can bounce back from their lackluster performances at their last starts.

Voleuse De Coeurs was well-backed in the lead-up to the 2014 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5, but finished a disappointing fifth and jockey Glen Boss blamed the wet track for the poor effort of the Teofilo mare.

Beirne told RSN this morning that he does not believe the wet track was the reason for Voleuse De Coeur’s defeat in The BMW and is of the opinion that the five-year-old is the class stayer in the 2014 Sydney Cup field.

“I have seen quite a few Sydney Cup’s won against the trend of the previous start and punters have naturally got five minute memories and they go naturally on the last start,” Beirne said.

“I am very sure that it wasn’t the wet track that got Voleuse last start and that it was something else; she didn’t put in.

“She is a far, far better horse than that and she is by far the quality horse of the race and on her European figures is better than the other Europeans in the race.

“I think that you have to own a ticket on it.”

Progressive gelding Sertorius is no certainty to take his place in the 2014 Sydney Cup field, but Beirne believes that the son of Galileo represents good value at his current quote of $9 for the Group 1 event at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Sertorius was a touch disappointing when fourth behind The Offer in the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) at Royal Randwick on April 12, but Beirne is confident that the Jamie Edwards-trained galloper is ready to peak in the Sydney Cup on Saturday.

“I am also prepared to forgive Sertorius,” Beirne said.

“It might have looked a bit pedestrian, but the trainer has followed the same pattern as last time and her PB was in her sixth run in from a spell when it was running its third run quiet quickly.

“It has done the same thing this time in and is having his third run in 14 days.

“I suspect that Sertorius is very good value.”

The Offer is currently a clear favourite for the feature staying event of the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and is the clear Sydney Cup tip of trainer Gai Waterhouse, who is confident that the Montjeu gelding and stablemate Hippopus will be the first horses across the line in the $1 million event.

Beirne believes that The Offer deserves to be favourite, but said that he can’t back the five-year-old at his current Sydney Cup odds of $3.

“I think that he deserves to be favourite,” Beirne said.

“I think that the race has quite a bit of quality and it is quite a deep race.

“If you watched the replay of last week and if the same The Offer turns up you would be inclined to think that he is a genuine 7/4 chance, but when you put a price on all those runners I can’t get him that short.

“I expect him to win, but he is under the odds and there are few at better value.”
