Jockey Brenton Avdulla is confident that Believe Yourself will relish the step-up to 1400 metres in the Sires Produce Stakes, after working home strongly in both the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), and Beirne told RSN that he believes the daughter of Sebring will receive an excellent run into Group 1 event, which he feels gives her a slight edge over Peggy Jean.

“If they are winning coming down the outside, Believe Yourself is very well-placed to run them down,” Beirne said.

“I would rather back her than Peggy Jean, but the computer hasn’t got very much between them.

“It is going to depend a lot on Peggy Jean’s barrier and whether it gets smothered up by some of these others.

“It is smothered up on my map and so he is going to have to dive inside or get the right run there whereas Believe Yourself has an easier passage.

“Having said that Peggy Jean has the best jockey in the country.”

Beirne believes that Believe Yourself and Peggy Jean are the two fillies to beat in the 2014 Sires Produce Stakes, but the former bookmaker said that he would not be surprised if there was an upset result in the $1 million race – indicating that the 2014 edition of the race was one of the weakest in the history of the event.

“This is probably the worst Sires that I have ever seen,” Beirne said.

“I have not seen one as bad as this.

“Whether you get a blowout or not is another question.

“The fillies look like they have the highest figures; are top three rated horses are seven (Believe Yourself), eight (Peggy Jean), nine (Lucky Raquie) and then A Time For War.

“Unencumbered worries me because his two poor ratings are on a wet track.”

Peggy Jean is currently a narrow favourite in 2014 Sires Produce Stakes betting markets, at odds of $3.50, while Believe Yourself is available at a quote of $4.20.
